100% Wolf – Power of the Firestone by Jayne Lyons

Vivid Publishing

Jayne Lyons’s new book, 100% Wolf – Power of the Firestone is the 3rd book in the 100% Wolf Series. It follows the adventures of Freddy Lupin, the werewolf stuck in a poodle’s body. It’s a middle grade novel for ages 8-12 and the first two books have been made into movies.

Thank you for speaking to Joy in Books at PaperbarkWords blog, Jayne.

Guest author post about 100% Wolf by Jayne Lyons

The original book, 100% Wolf, was published in 2008. In it we meet the hero Freddy Lupin, who is from a noble family of werewolves. But his first Transwolfation is a disaster when he turns into a yapping poodle instead of a ferocious werewolf. Just when Freddy thinks life can’t get any worse, he’s thrown into dog prison. Freddy has to prove that he’s still 100% wolf and save the werewolf pack from disaster.

Perhaps we can guess the outcome from the title of the second book – 100% Hero – published in 2009.

The books are a fast-paced adventures and also very funny. Freddy is a charming but flawed hero, whose disasters never seem to affect his high opinion of himself. But his heart is the right place – his focus is to emulate his father, Flasheart, and protect the Werepack. And his street-wise best friend, Batty the mongrel, keeps him grounded.

The books have strong themes running throughout of understanding and tolerance for those who appear different to us, and accepting who you are in whatever form.

I was lucky enough to have the film rights to 100% Wolf picked up, resulting in a movie released in 2020. This closely followed the storyline of the original book. It was produced in Australia by Flying Bark, directed by Alexs Stadermann, and featured the voices of Ilai Swindells, Samara Weaving, Magda Szubankski and Rhys Darby, amongst others.

It was really fascinating to work closely with the production team, from seeing the screenplay, through early story-boarding, the design of the characters, and the in the 3D animation. The characters are wonderfully drawn and brought to life. Two ABC T.V. series have also been produced, Legend of the Moonstone, and Book of Hath. Here the script writers imagined Freddy going to High School, and created some fantastic spin-off characters and storylines. The second film – 200% Wolf – was released in 2024, featuring the voice of Jennifer Saunders. This film used the character and world of my creations, but came up with a new storyline for Freddy and Batty.

And in 2024 I completed the third book – “Power of the Firestone” in which Freddy Lupin is back for another thrilling and laugh-out-loud adventure.

When the mischievous toddler Googie is kidnapped by the wicked Fairy Queen, Freddy must journey to the age of knights and deep into the mysterious Fairy Realm to rescue her. With his trusty sidekick Batty the dog by his side, Freddy will face off against powerful magical enemies and dangerous challenges. But to make it home, he’ll have to confront the toughest decision of his life. Can Freddy rise to the occasion, or will the baddies win this time?

I actually wrote an early draft of this book in 2010, and revisited it this year. It was interesting that there were certain scenes and jokes in that version that I realised had dated and where no longer suitable.  So I commenced on a rewrite. In the first two books there is a strong backstory of Freddy’s famous medieval ancestor, Sir Rathbone de Luppine, a famous hero, and his supposedly evil brother, Dravin Fireblood. These and other stories are recorded in the “Moonlight Chronicles” which Freddy loves to read. Being an avid reader of history, I really wanted to explore Freddy going back in time to experience the Medieval period. It gave me the opportunity to place him in terrible and funny new scrapes, but also for him to understand that what we read in history may not always be accurate.

I was really appreciative of Flying Bark who kindly supplied me with cover art for the book. I’m so happy with the result. And I hope people love the new story as much as I do.

The book can be purchased online by searching for “Jayne Lyons Power of the Firestone”,  or via the publisher’s website.

I think my next project for the 100% Wolf series will be my own spin-off from the T.V. show’s premise – taking Freddy and his new school friends into new funny and exciting adventures.
