Maryam Master’s My Tiny Universe: Book review by Joy Lawn
Maryam Master is an expert in channelling memorable characters who appeal to children. Her profound yet lively stories are heightened with important issues; she traverses themes of loss and mortality, identity and self-acceptance. All her novels brim with love.
My Tiny Universe is set in the near future. The planet is buffeted by extreme weather and ‘natural’ disasters caused by a litany of human mistakes. Master focuses on the impact of climate chaos on an 11-year-old boy and how he deals with its personal implications. Leif, who is named after the strong Viking archetype his parents hope he grows into, was born small and weak due to CIA (Climate Induced Anomalies). However, he has an enormous brain and loves science.
The events are told from Leif’s viewpoint, and Holly, his older sister’s ‘warts and all’, yet vulnerable, alternative perspective. Both address the reader, creating an immediate, intimate tone. Suspense is built through the discovery of who lit the school fire, Leif’s experiences on the run and an ingenious, timely twist.
Children are concerned about climate change and its effect on their lives. As a young person of high intelligence and a conscience, Leif may be a spokesperson for his generation.
